The mission of the Director, Technology is to create value through driving and implementing the appropriate technology across the Sterling portfolio.  The Director, Technology will serve as a trusted advisor, technical expert and execution facilitator to our deal teams and portfolio company executive teams on business technology initiatives. The Director, Technology will be a critical and integral part of the Sterling value creation model and be the go-to resource for expertise in the domain of technology.


The role will be focused on two main areas:

  • Portfolio value creation (~80% of time) – supporting executive teams and deals team in advancing the technological effectiveness of portfolio companies.  The Director, Technology will help deal teams identify strategic and operational IT opportunities and develop specific plans for execution. This work will include assessing, initiating, planning, monitoring and executing IT initiatives across the Sterling portfolio. The effective Director will leverage deal teams, portfolio management and third-party resources to formulate the successful execution model for key IT initiatives.   Further, the Director, Technology will develop methods of engagement in a variety of settings, with a constant focus on getting results.  This may include interim roles as VP of IT or CIO within a portfolio company.


  • Sterling value creation (~20% of time) – working across the firm and through committees (primarily Sterling’s Portfolio Improvement Committee) the Director, Technology will be the thought leader for the continued development of Sterling’s capability to drive value creation through technology in our investments. The Director, Technology will work across the firm to develop best practices in IT,  leveraging process and technology solutions that last through benchmarking, training, project planning and execution.



Working with the deal teams, portfolio company executives and third party consultants, this role will be responsible for supporting the portfolio companies in the identification and execution of 3 to 4 major IT projects at any given time. The areas of expertise and impact for the Director, Technology will span the full range of technology areas, including:


  1. Business Applications
  • Act as a business partner in advising top management of the latest technology by recommending appropriate action; serve as the technical advisor for internal systems and applications as well as market facing applications, systems and platforms, e.g. e-commerce
  • Support the development of an annual technology strategic plan consistent with the company’s strategic plan
  • Advise on post-acquisition integration, ERP selection, ERP Project Management, ERP turnarounds and optimization of current system
  • Provide leadership for planning, implementation and support of core IT operations
  • Conceptualize strategic IT initiatives, and oversee IT projects from concept to execution, including ongoing support
  • Ensure scalability, uptime and performance of key IT and business systems to support business operations and growth
  • Advise on and be responsible for providing approaches for overall business and operations projects (MDM, PIM)


  1. Infrastructure
  • Work with portfolio teams to develop and execute on an enterprise-wide disaster recovery and business continuity plan to ensure continuity of critical business functions and minimize loss in the event of power outages, weather catastrophes, hardware failures and/or other disasters or disruptions to the company’s systems and services
  • Advise on the design and modernization of all critical enterprise-wide IT systems, services and infrastructure, effectuating a flexible IT architecture and cost structure
  • Provide thought leadership and subject matter expertise in cloud infrastructure, defining the strategy and driving change
  • Partner with project teams, vendors, support organizations, functional architects to drive cloud migration/adoption from inception to implementation
  • Create conceptual data models, data flow documentation and user workflow processes


  1. IT Organization
  • Advise on the establishment of goals, the measurement of results, and the management of IT operations based on KPIs
  • Advise on an appropriate IT organizational structure that supports the needs and growth strategies of the company
  • Identify opportunities for the appropriate and cost-effective investment of financial resources in IT systems and resources, including staffing, sourcing, purchasing, and in-house development
  • Assist in development and control of the technology annual operating and capital budgets; provide models on the cost/benefit analyses for IT spending and initiatives
  • Identify a list of preferred vendors and consultants to support business


  1. Cybersecurity
  • Assess and communicate risks associated with IT investments and develop business case justifications
  • Support the development and implementation of enterprise-wide security
  • Working with the management team, ensure staff, policies, processes, practices and technologies proactively protect and defend the enterprise from cyber threats and prevent the occurrence and recurrence of cybersecurity incidents commensurate with company’s risk tolerance
  • Create a framework for enhancing and improving data security for each business, identifying vulnerabilities and implementing a comprehensive plan to secure each environment



  • Motivated to get into the field with management teams to build relationship, monitor and advise
  • Ability to influence the executive teams to drive the desired business outcomes under the IT function
  • May act as an interim Chief Information Officer within portfolio companies as needed
  • Align functional areas of the company to meet strategic objectives



  • 10 years of IT leadership in mid-market or large businesses, culminating in a CIO or VP IT role
  • 5-10 years if IT consulting experience from well-known firms across multiple functional areas and clear ability to bring functional frameworks
  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology or related field
  • Experience working for private equity portfolio companies
  • Experience with and/or comfort with dotted-line reporting structures / primarily influencing roles
  • Extensive experience overseeing and utilizing third parties
  • Experience working in a “performance based” and fast paced environment
  • Able to drive 2-3 IT engagements, develop functional standards, take interim CIO roles
  • Preference for industrial experience
